Justin Bieber takes top prizes at the American Music Awards

Justin Bieber was the big winner at Sunday's American Music Awards, taking home three prizes, including Favorite Artist of the Year.

The newly single teen heartthrob, who brought his mom as his date, also won Favorite Pop/Rock Album and was named Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist. In his acceptance speech, he dedicated the latter to "all the haters who thought that I was just here for one or two years," promising, "I'm going to be here for a very long time."

Other big winners throughout the evening included Bieber's Canadian compatriot, Carly Rae Jepsen, who won New Artist of the Year (beating out One Direction, Gotye, fun. and J. Cole); Katy Perry, who was named Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist; and Rihanna, who took home the prize for Favorite Soul/R&B Album.

Nicki Minaj, who will make her debut as an American Idol judge starting in January, won two awards -- Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist. For the fifth year in a row, Taylor Swift was named Favorite Country Female Artist.

The broadcast also featured performances by Bieber, Swift, Jepsen, Psy, Usher, Kelly Clarkson, and others. Stevie Wonder paid tribute to Dick Clark with a musical medley.
