Stapleton died in her New York City home of natural causes, her family said.
Born in New York City, Stapleton got her first gig in 1949 in a national touring edition of the play Harvey. In 1953, she starred in the Broadway production of In the Summer House.
Stapleton soon starred in several hit musicals, including Damn Yankees, The Bells are Ringing and Funny Girl with a young Barbra Streisand.
In 1971, Stapleton won the role of the naïve Edith Bunker, opposite Carroll O'Connor. She won three Emmys for the role. The show itself won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series three times as well.
Since All in the Family ended in 1979, Stapleton has appeared in the films Michael, with John Travolta, You've Got Mail, with Meg Ryan, and television shows like Touched by an Angel, Everybody Loves Raymond and Murphy Brown.
Stapleton was married to William Putch for 25 years before his death in 1983. She is survived by their two children, Pamela and John.
