Former MLB pitcher Pascual Perez dies at 55

Former Major League Baseball pitcher Pascual Perez was killed at his home in the Dominican Republic in an apparent robbery, ESPN reports. He was 55 years old.

According to police, no one was in custody and it is unknown if there are any suspects. Police said were several assailants and that the house in the town of Don Gregorio appeared to have been ransacked during a search for money. His exact cause of death was unknown, but it appeared that Perez had suffered a fractured skull from a blow to the head.

Perez played 11 seasons in the major leagues, beginning with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1980 and ending with The New York Yankees in 1991. During his time on the mound, Perez also played for the Atlanta Braves and the Montreal Expos and was named an All-Star in 1983. During his career, Perez amassed a 67-68 record and 822 strikeouts. However, during his career he was also suspended twice for drug use -- once in 1984 and again in 1992, after which he never returned to baseball.
