Nissan recalls 51,000 cars after steering fault

HELSINKI (AP) - Nissan Motor Co. says it is recalling 51,000 cars worldwide after a defect caused a steering wheel in one of its models sold in Finland to become detached.

Nissan Nordic Europe spokeswoman Taina Erkkila says the defect likely would mean replacing parts in some 600 recalled vehicles.

The recall was issued after Finnish national broadcaster YLE reported last month that the steering wheel in a Nissan Qashqai driven by one of its cameramen came loose as he was driving. He was not hurt, YLE said.

Erkkila says that the defect could cause the steering wheel to loosen only "in extreme circumstances."

Markus Tammisto from MetroAuto, which retails Nissan models, said Thursday that the recall affects Nissan Qashqai, Qashqai+2 and Nissan NV200 models.
