News Summary: Slaughterhouse abuse settlement

By The Associated Press

JUDGMENT: A California slaughterhouse on Friday agreed to a symbolic $497 million settlement with the U.S. government and the Human Society.

INHUMANE: In 2007 a video showed Hallmark Meat Co. employees using chains to move cows who were too sick to walk to the slaughter, ramming the cows with forklifts, and spraying them with high-pressure hoses. The video lead to a recall of 37 million pounds of beef and was used as part of a campaign to improve conditions for farm animals.

IMPORTANT SYMBOL: Hallmark Meat is bankrupt and is not expected to pay the judgment.
