THE PROTESTS: Anti-Japan demonstrations related to a dispute involving contested islands in the East China Sea erupted in dozens of Chinese cities. Scores of Japanese-owned factories and stores in China were shuttered, as thousands of anti-Japanese protesters marched in Beijing.
THE INTERVENTION: Chinese authorities appeared to be moving to clamp down on the protests, while the Japanese government has been urging Beijing to do more to protect Japanese businesses from trespassing, looting and other damage.
INTERTWINED ECONOMIES: The Chinese and Japanese economies are so closely meshed that both would suffer from any long-term disruptions. Total trade rose to a record $344.9 billion last year.
