PARENTAL GUIDANCE: Parents of college-bound students must decide whether credit cards are a good idea for their children, as offers from banks and credit card issuers stream in.

CARDS FOR KIDS: Despite restrictions under the Credit Card Act of 2009, college students under age 21 can still get credit cards if they have a co-signer or can show independent means to repay the debt.

CREDIT OR DEBIT: Payment options for students are plentiful. Credit cards can help build credit scores, but a debit or prepaid card may be a better first step until a student has experience handling money.
