News Summary: China's growth slows, stocks dawdle

By The Associated Press

WISHY-WASHY WEEK: The stock market has had a hard time making up its mind all week. The major stock indexes were slightly higher Monday and Tuesday, and mixed on Wednesday and Thursday. They ended Friday slightly higher, but only after spending most of the day slightly lower.

AROUND THE WORLD: Europe, where even incremental developments in the debt crisis have swung U.S. markets dramatically, was quiet. But China reported a big drop in export growth, which is worrisome because China is the world's second-biggest economy.

YELLOW CARD: Manchester United may be white hot as a British soccer club, but its debut as a public company fizzled. The company started trading at $14, less than expected, and that was all the market could handle. It closed its first day exactly where it started.
