GAINING GRAINS: Prices rose for wheat, corn and soybeans as adverse weather hit key farming regions in Brazil and Argentina. Although it's early in the season, some investors questioned whether the problems will wind up hurting the harvest.

ECONOMIC MIX: Other commodities were mostly lower on mixed economic news. China said its economy grew in the July-through-September period from the year-ago quarter. Meanwhile, applications for U.S. jobless claims jumped to the highest level in four months.

UPS, DOWNS: Prices fell for gold, silver, industrial metals and oil. Natural gas and cocoa finished higher.
