PILOT CONTRACT: American Airlines and its pilots will resume negotiations on a new contract, but there's no guarantee of labor peace. The nation's third-biggest airline imposed new pay and work terms this month as it reorganizes under bankruptcy protection.

PASSENGERS WAIT: Pilots are calling in sick and reporting maintenance issues on planes more often. That's led to more canceled and delayed flights. Monday, 6.1 percent were scrubbed and only half the rest arrived on time.

COCKPIT FLU: Change in percentage of pilots calling in sick by month in 2012 compared with the same month last year, according to American: January, down 4.3 percent; February, up 6.5 percent; March, up 22.4 percent; April, up 32.2 percent; May, up 32.8 percent; June, up 32.9 percent; July, up 19.7 percent; August, up 23.2 percent; September, up 20.8 percent.
