A batch of worrying economic figures tugged stock markets slightly lower Thursday. Measures of manufacturing and business activity in both China and Europe slumped.
In the U.S., the railroad Norfolk Southern warned that it's shipping fewer goods, and the government gave investors another reminder that the job market remains weak.
The Dow Jones industrial average inched up 18.97 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 13,596.93.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 0.79 of a point, or less than 0.1 percent, to 1,460.26.
The Nasdaq composite index dropped 6.66 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,175.96.
For the week:
The Dow is up 3.56 points, or less than 0.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 5.51 points, or 0.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 7.99 points, or 0.3 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,379.37, or 11.3 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 202.66, or 16.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 570.81, or 21.9 percent.
