How the major stock indexes fared Tuesday

Stocks finished roughly flat after a warning from the Federal Reserve chairman about the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect Jan. 1.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 7.45 points, or 0.06 percent, to 12,788.51.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.92 point, or 0.07 percent, to 1,387.81.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.61 point, or 0.02 percent, to 2,916.68.

For the week:

The Dow is up 200.20 points, or 1.6 percent.

The S&P is up 27.93 points, or 2.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 63.55 points, or 2.2 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 570.95 points, or 4.7 percent.

The S&P is up 130.21 points, or 10.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 311.53 points, or 12 percent.
