Boeing 737-900ER

The order: 50 jets.

Seats: 173

Price: $89.6 million each.

First arrival: Late 2013. United operates 43 of this type currently.

Boeing 737 Max 9

The order: 100 jets, plus options for more.

Seats: Up to 215.

Price: $101.7 million each.

First arrival: 2018.

Notes: Plane makers disclose list prices, but steep discounts are common. United is a unit of United Continental Holdings Inc.
